What are era constraints in AwakeVerse Story mode?

Era constraints keep your story world coherent. When you set an era for your Story, the AI restricts its responses to what belongs in that time and place — technology, language, knowledge, social context, and material culture.

A mystery set in 1880s London will not reference electricity if gas lamps are the technology of the era. A story set in ancient West Africa will not reach for modern political concepts. The world stays consistent.

What you set when creating a Story

When setting up a Story, you choose two things that define era constraints:

Era The historical period your story is set in — Medieval, Renaissance, Victorian, Early Modern, 20th Century, Contemporary, Future, or a custom setting you define yourself.

Tech level The level of technology available in your world. This can match the era automatically, or you can customise it — useful for alternate history settings where the era is historical but the technology is different.

What era constraints actually affect

What the character knows A character set in 1890s London knows what 1890s London knows. They will not reference concepts, events, or inventions that postdate their world.

What exists in the world Objects, places, social structures, and institutions in the story are filtered through the era. The AI will not introduce anachronistic elements unless the story's premise explicitly calls for them.

How the character speaks Language and register shift with era. A Victorian character will not use contemporary slang. A character from antiquity will not frame ideas in modern psychological terms.

Scene and atmosphere The physical world the AI describes — what things look like, smell like, how spaces are arranged — is shaped by the era you have set.

Era constraints vs character personality

Era constraints shape the world. Character personality shapes the person. These are separate things.

Sherlock Holmes in 1890s London behaves consistently with 1890s London — but his personality (methodical, impatient, observational) is maintained independently of the era. If you put Sherlock in a future setting, he would still be Sherlock — but the world around him would shift accordingly.

Can I turn era constraints off?

You can set a custom era or leave the era field open, which gives the AI more flexibility. If you are writing speculative fiction or want to blend time periods deliberately, a custom setting lets you define the rules of your own world.

Why this matters

Era constraints are what make historically grounded stories feel authentic. Without them, AI storytelling tends to flatten all eras into a vaguely contemporary voice. With them, stepping into a Victorian mystery or an ancient empire feels like actually stepping there.
